 History:
  •U.S. Army Airfield, constructed 11/1919 to 7/1921, on the site of William H. Vanderbilt's farm.
  •Named Miller Field for Captain James Ely Miller, shot down 3/10/1918 while comanding the 95th Sqaudron over Rheims.
  Air Service Coast Defense Station for the East Coast until October 1922.
  •The 102nd Observation Squadron, 27th Aviation Division, New York National Guard move to Miller Field in 1923 from Mitchel Field.
  •The U.S. Army 1st Division, Tank Company move here 7/25/1925 after training at Camp Dix. Based here through the 1930's.
  Admiral Richard Bird tests Ford Trimotor “Floyd Bennett” airplane engine at Miller Field, summer 1928. This plane engine would take Admiral Bird to the South Pole.
  •The 102nd moved to Fort McClellan, Arkansas 10/15/1940.
  •From 1943 to 1946, twin 90mm Anti-Torpedo Boat Guns, AMTB Battery II guarded the New York Harbor from Miller Field
  •In 1950's Miller Field repaired Nike missiles.
  •Miller Field was the last grass runway in New York City.
  •Deactivated November 1969.
  •Now part of Gateway National Recreation Area.
