   °  SUNY Maritime College Privateers history:
 • N.Y. Maritime began as the “New York Nautical School” Dec. 14, 1874 on the USS St. Marys. The three-master served in the Pacific Fleet during the Civil War; training ship to 1908.
 • The USS Newport, training ship 1908-1931, was a combination steam and sail powered ship launched 1895 that had served off Cuba in the Spanish-American War.
 • The USS Newport moored at West 97th Street on the North River, alongside the First Battalion, New York Naval Militia training ship and headquarters, the U.S.S. Granite State.
 • Moved to Fort Schuyler on Throgg's Neck in 1934.
 • SUNY Maritime from 1948.
 • Co-ed from 1972.
   °  Fort Schuyler history:
 • Land leased by Dutch New Amsterdam Oct. 2, 1642 to John Throgmorton.
 • William Bayard sold this land at Throgg's Neck to the U.S. Government 1826.
 • Fort Schuyler, companion to Fort Totten at Willet's Point across the Long Island Sound 1833-1911
 • Named for General Philip Schuyler (commander of the Northern Army 1777), the (irregular) pentagon shaped fort, made of Greenwich granite was completed 1845-1856
 • Held Confederate Prisoners of War 1864.
 • Abandoned 1870.
 • Reconstructed 1873-1875 (suspended.)
 • Closed 1911.
 • Leased to N.Y. State Maritime Academy 1931.
 • Last garrison, Headquarters & Service Platoon & Company A, 29th Engineers, withdrawn 1934.
 • One side of the Napoleonic-style star shaped fort today houses the SUNY Maritime's Luce Library, two other sides also facing the Sound house the Fort Schuyler Museum.
