Anchor Line 5 Railroad 5 - New York, Philadelphia & Norfolk Railroad 5 (tie)
The Erie and Western Transportation Co., better known as the Anchor Line was a steamship subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad 1867-1915, carrying passengers and freight on the Great Lakes between Buffalo and Duluth, and freight only Buffalo-Chicago. The Anchor Line Dock Five, Erie, Pa. had a large grain elevator at the end of the dock (The PRR Grain Elevators, built 1867, burned 1915, can be seen at the end of Dock 5 on the left in this old photo. Dock 6 to the right was the Anchor Line's passenger and freight terminal. The next two, docks 7 & 8 were Pittsburgh & Erie RR. Note the gravity coal unloading trestle on P & E's coal deck on Dock 7). I am interpolating that Dock 5, Anchor Line at Erie is where this football team was from; perhaps there may even have been a switching railroad on this dock in Erie, Pennsylvania. In 1915, anti-trust legislation outlawed railroads owning steamship lines and the PRR had to divest of the Anchor Line.
[See the Steamship Octorara for an example of the Anchor Line's Great Lakes' fleet. The ships at first were green hulls to the deck, then white above, yellow spars, crimson smoke stacks with black bands, the Anchor Line symbol was an anchor, as can be seen on this Pennsylvania Railroad-Anchor Line boxcar model.]
The New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk RR, opened 1884, Delmar-Cape Charles-Norfolk. Connecting with and later controlled by the PRR until finally swallowed up as the Norfolk Division of the PRR in 1920. Passenger steamships between Cape Charles and Norfolk ran to 1953, passenger trains on the Delmarva Peninsula to 1958. Today the largest short line railroad, the Eastern Shore RR operates what remains of this line, including the rail carfloats.
